Gary Dyson, un antiguo compañero de colegio de RICHARD TANDY escribió hace poco en un grupo de Facebook, e incluyó unas imágenes del año 1963 en la que aparece tanto él como el mismo RICHARD. En aquella época le llamaban «Tand». Comenta que él fue aspirante a batería en la primera «banda» en la que tocó TANDY, aunque nunca formó parte de ella finalmente.

A principios de los sesenta, el Colegio Moseley Grammar produjo muchas bandas y músicos, entre ellos BEV BEVAN. En ese momento BEV estaba en una banda llamada «Denny Laine and the Diplomats». Solíamos verlos en el Salón de Baile de Springfield en Sparkhill. Eran fantásticos y BEV era famoso por sus solos de batería mientras que el resto de la banda iba a fumar. El bajista de la banda era Tony Lewis. Su hermano era Pete Lewis, que estaba en la misma clase que yo y RICHARD TANDY.

Pete vivía en una gran casa que tenía una sala de billar que se había convertido en un lugar de ensayo. Entre los conciertos, la banda dejaba su equipo preparado y listo para entrar en esta sala. RICHARD vivía en Greet (un área de Birmingham) y de vez en cuando nos reuníamos allí para practicar. Los diplomáticos habían llevado egoístamente su equipo a otro lugar. Yo no tenía mi propio equipo, así que solía golpear un taburete de piano acolchado en su habitación. Los padres de «Tand» eran geniales y soportaban todo el ruido y luego su madre nos traía té y un montón de galletas.

RICHARD y Pete Lewis se convirtieron en parte de una banda llamada las Chantelles. Eran brillantes. (Empezaron a sonar como Paul Whitehouse en el Fast Show) y el resto, como dicen, es historia.

Incluso a una edad temprana RICHARD era muy modesto a pesar de sus obvios talentos. Era físicamente fuerte y muy inteligente. Mientras nos preparábamos para los niveles de «O», él salía a tocar con la banda, pero aún así obtenía mejores resultados que la mayoría de la gente.

Pete lived in a large house that had a pool room that had been converted into a rehearsal space. Between concerts, the band would leave their equipment prepared and ready to enter this room. I'm not sure they realized we used to "make sure everything kept running" when they weren't there. Yes, I used to play drums for BEV BEVAN!
At first, RICHARD wasn't part of the lineup but we knew we needed a lead guitarist. Then one day RICHARD was there. NoHe said nothing about being able to touch. She sat on the bench and, during a break, picked up a semi-acoustic guitar and wow… He blew us away! It was brilliant.
