La bendita culpa la tuvo “Livin ‘Thing”…
Para cualquier persona sería imposible expresar lo vivido en los últimos 12 años, máxime si nos alejamos más atrás hasta los 36. Por esto, voy a sobrevolar con mi nave ELO particular para recorrer ese espacio de tiempo en un breve repaso que no contendrá todo pero sí lo más significativo. Antes de comenzar, sé a ciencia cierta que se quedará parte importante sin nombrar y que supondrá dejar vacíos de contenido, pero no podré evitarlo. Gran parte o lo más esencial lo intentaré dejar aquí haciendo lo posible por no obviar aquello más importante y relevante.
Corría el año 1975… Con 14 años deambulaba entre músicas de estilos diversos con mi radiocassete y cantidad de cintas que hoy serían una reliquia. Por entonces casi me hago fan de BEATLES (como tantos otros), pero un año después llegó a mis sentidos el sonido que me marcaría “de por vida” el ser, o no ser fan de una banda musical.
Llegó sin esperarlo, sin llamarlo, sin ir a buscarlo. Llegó y se quedó conmigo sin que yo lo evitara… y… sencillamente, lo viví y me transformó.
Si hoy sigo siendo fan de ELO es por la bendita culpa de JEFF LYNNE, su “Livin ’Thing” y el mundo musical que creó desde esa imaginación suya de genio indiscutible.
Coincidente fue que, durante el verano de 1976, un amigo de fuera de mi ciudad y que venía de visita a nuestras fiestas patronales me prestó el álbum “A New World Record” por unos días. La portada me resultó conocida nada más verla y poderosamente atractiva por haberla visto antes en manos de otros jóvenes de mi edad que compartían cervezas al aire libre en mesas de lugares de copas. Sin saberlo yo, el tema musical que tantas sensaciones me proporcionaba y la portada de este disco guardaban una estrecha relación que desde entonces me resulta mágica.
Lo verdaderamente ilusionante para mi fue escuchar este disco completamente y descubrir un nuevo mundo musicalmente hablando. No era solo “Livin ‘Thing”. Éste tema era parte de “UN TODO”, y sin el resto sólo era una porción de felicidad para mis sentidos. A partir de aquí ELO fue el objetivo a descubrir.
Conforme descubría el pasado musical de esta banda: “Eldorado” (mi preferido) y “Face The Music”, mi propio mundo se transformaba. Fue un afán por llegar hasta el final que hoy por hoy no me sorprende, pero que entonces hubiese resultado preocupante si alguien se hubiese enterado de mi propósito y mi desmedido interés.
Llegó “Out Of The Blue” rompiendo todos mis esquemas. A partir de ahí ya no se transformaría más mi mundo…. a partir de ahí cambiaría mi vida… ¡nunca imaginé hasta dónde!
Me consideraba fan de ELO de pleno derecho y, por ende, del creador y genio de este proyecto: JEFF LYNNE.
Con mucho esfuerzo por la dificultad de encontrarlos, conseguí los tres primeros álbumes de este genio y así me enteré de la existencia de Roy Wood… alguien que compartió la creatividad junto a JEFF en los dos primeros discos. Descubrí tiempo después The Move, Idle Race… sorprendiéndome sin parar de los pasos andados por JEFF y sus creaciones musicales.
Mientras tanto nacían “Discovery”, “Xanadu”, “Time”… a un ritmo vertiginoso. Y, aunque nunca sonó ELO tan bien como hasta entonces (desde mi punto de vista), sí consiguió ilusionarme en cada nueva entrega y vivir el momento único de pinchar cada uno de los vinilos por primera vez en mi giradiscos, y mientras lo escuchaba disfrutar del diseño de las portadas y su contenido, leyendo y releyendo los créditos y la letra de las canciones… hasta el más mínimo e ínfimo detalle.
Me sorprende recordar la impaciencia que sentía siempre, al imaginar cómo sería y cómo sonaría el siguiente trabajo de ELO/JEFF cuando apenas tenía en las manos uno nuevo. Mi hambre no tenía límites entonces, y debo admitir que hoy tampoco.
Llegaron “Secret Messages” y “Balance Of Power” dejando extraños sinsabores sin que éstos pudieran mermar lo ya realizado anteriormente por esta banda. En 1997, y con la llegada de internet tuve la suerte de poder inscribirme como fan de ELO en una web extranjera que cerró primero estas suscripciones y al año aproximadamente la página en su totalidad. Durante ese año recibí cartas de amigos de toda España que, al ver mis datos en dicha web, me pedian información para aparecer en la misma, tal y cual yo lo había hecho antes. Les respondí personalmente a cada uno de ellos, y me sorprendió que hubiese tantas personas en nuestro país con las mismas inquietudes que yo por la música de ELO. Desde ese mismo momento consideré que yo no era un “bicho tan raro” cuando tantos otros FANS llamaban a mi puerta.
Eso y el cierre definitivo de esa web provocó que ELO ESPAÑA se convirtiese, primero en un proyecto y después en una realidad, donde, además de rendir tributo/homenaje a ELO/JEFF por todo lo que yo recibí de él, se crearía un listado de fans o seguidores de ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA que denominaría AMIGOS DE ELO ESPAÑA con los datos de aquellos que quisiesen aparecer en ella como tales. Cabe decir que este listado creció más rápidamente de lo esperado, consiguiendo tener amigos en prácticamente todas las provincias españolas en poco tiempo. Después llegaron desde otros países de habla hispana y del resto del mundo. Hoy continúa creciendo.
Siendo “Zoom” un buen trabajo que bien podría haber pasado como un disco solista de JEFF, sonó como un portazo a lo que fue hasta entonces ELO. La semilla seguía germinando en mi interior.
Es aquí donde he de dejar de hablar de forma personal o particular, para hablar en nombre de tod@s aquellos que formamos ELO ESPAÑA y que por su condición, son parte de esta gran familia cibernética de chiflados por la música de ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA y JEFF LYNNE.
Una cosa llevó a otra y paulatinamente fuimos incrementando las secciones de nuestra web con contenidos cada vez más interesantes para nuestros visitantes: foro, encuestas, concursos, sorteo de entradas, libro de visitas, agenda calendario, tablón de anuncios, traducciones, podcast, tienda, agenda/calendario, crónicas de conciertos, anuarios y mucho mas. Hoy ELO ESPAÑA sigue escribiendo su futuro. Lo que comenzó el 20 de mayo de 1999 con reducidos recursos fue cambiando y adaptándose a los tiempos sin perder aquellos motivos por lo que fue concebido y ampliándose en cuanto a contenido e información de actualidad, siempre referente a ELO/JEFF y relativos. Primero recurrimos a espacios gratuitos con publicidad que permitiera nuestra existencia, y más adelante compramos un dominio propio y hosting para albergar una web como merecía ELO.
Realizamos reuniones virtuales vía chat y también de forma presencial permitiendo conocernos personalmente. Conseguimos entradas para varios conciertos de “The Orchestra” en nuestro país que sorteamos desde nuestra web, e incluso pases especiales para asisitir a los ensayos de esta banda, y hoy se nos reconoce desde diferentes medios de comunicación, e incluso miembros originales de la banda nos han escrito de forma personal. No tenemos metas y es por esto que seguimos existiendo y creciendo. Prueba de lo que decimos es este ESPECIAL ELO 40 ANIVERSARIO que a día de hoy es el único homenaje que alguien ha dado a esta banda por cumplir ese aniversario.
En doce años que ha cumplido ELO ESPAÑA hemos pasado por mejores y no tan mejores momentos, pero todos han valido la pena vivirlos porque no ha habido “peores momentos” nunca, y porque de todos ellos hemos ganado lo que más vale en este mundo, que son los amigos conseguidos y a los cuales no nombro porque no podría mencionarlos a todos sin que alguien pudiese quedar sin aparecer no por omisión sino por olvido. Y todo gracias a la música de JEFF LYNNE.
De nuevo, y de forma personal, debo reconocer muchos agradecimientos a tanta gente que no sabría por donde comenzar… bueno, sí… a mi familia sobre todo, que han aguantado y lo siguen haciendo, a este chiflado y fanático que ocupa casi todo su tiempo libre en pensamientos mELOmanos, y que ha inculcado la música de JEFF hasta conseguir que su propia esposa e hijas reconozcan esta música al vuelo, apoyándome y animándome en cada una de las iniciativas que propongo sin fisuras. A JEFF y a sus creaciones, como responsable directo de todo lo vivido, y a cada uno de los amigos creados a consecuencia de la bendita existencia de este genio. Ellos saben quienes son…
Al final lo que importa es que todo valió la pena y que “lo mejor todavía está por llegar”. ELO forma parte de mi como yo formo parte de este mundo al que también agradezco que haya hecho coincidir nuestra existencia para conocernos y rendir mi merecido homenaje a JEFF LYNNE a través de ELO ESPAÑA. Creo que nunca haré lo suficiente para pagar el gran legado y la felicidad que me ha aportado la música de éste genio musical.

THE REASON WHY

The blessed “fault” belongs to Livin’ Thing...
For anyone, it would be impossible to express what I’ve lived through over the last 12 years—let alone going back as far as 36. That’s why I’m going to fly over this stretch of time in my own personal ELO spaceship, offering a brief look back that won’t capture everything, but will try to highlight the most meaningful parts. I already know that important moments will be left out, leaving some gaps, but I can’t avoid it. Still, I’ll do my best to leave the essence here and not overlook what’s most relevant and significant.
It was 1975… I was 14, wandering through all kinds of music genres with my radio cassette player and a bunch of tapes that would be relics today. At the time, I was almost becoming a fan of the BEATLES (like so many others), but a year later, I came across a sound that would define my life—whether to be or not to be a fan of a band.
It arrived without warning, without being called, without being sought. It came and stayed with me—and I didn’t stop it… and… I simply lived it, and it transformed me.
If I’m still an ELO fan today, it’s thanks to the blessed “fault” of JEFF LYNNE, his Livin’ Thing, and the musical world he built from the imagination of an unquestionable genius.
As fate would have it, during the summer of 1976, a friend visiting our local patron saint festival lent me the album A New World Record for a few days. The cover immediately struck me—it looked familiar and powerfully attractive, probably because I’d seen it in the hands of other kids my age who were hanging out at bars, sharing beers outdoors. Unbeknownst to me, the song that had stirred so many emotions and the artwork of that album were magically connected.
What truly amazed me was listening to that entire album—and discovering a whole new musical world. It wasn’t just Livin’ Thing. That song was part of a whole, and without the rest, it was just a fraction of the joy my senses could experience. From that point on, ELO became something to be fully explored.
As I began discovering the band’s earlier works—Eldorado (my favorite) and Face the Music—my own world was transforming. It became a drive to reach the very end of their discography, something that doesn’t surprise me now, but back then might’ve seemed a little obsessive had anyone known just how deep my passion ran.
Then Out of the Blue arrived and shattered all my expectations. From that moment, my world didn’t just transform—it changed my life… and I never imagined just how far it would take me!
I considered myself a full-fledged ELO fan, and by extension, a fan of the mastermind behind it all: JEFF LYNNE.
After much effort, given how difficult it was to find them, I finally got my hands on the first three albums by this genius—and that’s how I learned about Roy Wood, who co-created the first two albums alongside JEFF. Later I discovered The Move and Idle Race, constantly amazed by the journey JEFF had taken and the music he’d created.
Meanwhile, albums like Discovery, Xanadu, and Time kept coming at a dizzying pace. And although (in my opinion) ELO never sounded as good again as they did up to that point, each new release still filled me with excitement. I’d savor that first listen on my turntable, absorbing the cover art and all its contents—reading and rereading the liner notes and lyrics… down to the smallest detail.
I’m amazed when I recall the impatience I used to feel, always wondering what the next ELO/JEFF release would sound like even as I held the latest one in my hands. My hunger back then was insatiable—and I must admit, it still is.
Secret Messages and Balance of Power came along, leaving some mixed feelings, but they never diminished the value of what the band had already accomplished. In 1997, with the arrival of the internet, I was lucky enough to register as an ELO fan on a foreign website that first closed its fan listing and, about a year later, shut down entirely. During that time, I received letters from fans all over Spain who had seen my info on the site and were asking how they could be listed too, just like I had done. I replied personally to each of them, and I was genuinely surprised to find so many people in Spain who shared my passion for ELO’s music. That’s when I realized I wasn’t such an “odd one out” after all.
This experience, along with the eventual closing of that website, gave rise to ELO ESPAÑA—first as an idea, and then as a reality. Not only was it created as a tribute to ELO/JEFF for everything I had received through their music, but also to compile a list of ELO fans and followers, which I called AMIGOS DE ELO ESPAÑA, featuring those who wanted to be recognized as such. That list grew faster than I expected, and before long, we had friends from nearly every province in Spain. Later, fans from Spanish-speaking countries and other parts of the world joined in. Today, the community keeps growing.
Though Zoom was a great album that could have passed as a JEFF solo project, to me it felt like the slamming door of what ELO once was. Still, the seed inside me kept growing.
This is where I stop speaking on a personal level and speak on behalf of all of us who form part of ELO ESPAÑA—those who, by being part of it, belong to this great cyber-family of ELO and JEFF LYNNE fanatics.
One thing led to another, and little by little, we added more sections to our website with increasingly interesting content: forum, polls, contests, ticket giveaways, guestbook, event calendar, bulletin board, translations, podcasts, a store, concert reports, yearbooks, and more. Today, ELO ESPAÑA continues writing its future. What began on May 20, 1999 with minimal resources evolved and adapted with the times—never losing its original purpose and expanding in content and relevance, always focused on ELO/JEFF. At first we used free hosting with ads, just to have a place online, but eventually we purchased our own domain and hosting—because ELO deserved a proper website.
We’ve had virtual meetings via chat and in-person meetups too, allowing us to connect face-to-face. We secured concert tickets for several The Orchestra shows in Spain and raffled them through our site. We even got special passes to attend rehearsals. Today, we’re recognized by various media outlets—and even original members of the band have written to us personally. We don’t set limits for ourselves—and that’s why we’re still here and still growing. Proof of that is this ELO 40th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL, which, to this day, remains the only tribute made to commemorate the band’s 40th anniversary.
In the 12 years ELO ESPAÑA has existed, we’ve had highs and not-so-highs—but every moment has been worth living, because we’ve never had a “bad” moment. Through it all, we’ve gained the most valuable thing in the world: the friends we’ve made. I won’t name them all here—because I couldn’t mention everyone without unintentionally leaving someone out. And all of it is thanks to JEFF LYNNE’s music.
Once again—personally—I owe so many people my gratitude that I wouldn’t know where to begin… well, yes… with my family, above all, who’ve put up with (and still put up with) this crazy, fanatical guy who spends almost all his free time on mELOmaniac thoughts, and who’s instilled JEFF’s music so deeply that even my wife and daughters recognize it instantly. They’ve supported and encouraged me with every idea I’ve brought to life—without hesitation. To JEFF and his creations, as the direct source of everything I’ve experienced. And to every friend I’ve made thanks to the blessed existence of this genius. They know who they are…
In the end, what matters is that it was all worth it—and that the best is yet to come. ELO is part of me, just as I am part of this world that, thankfully, let our paths cross—so I could discover ELO and pay tribute to JEFF LYNNE through ELO ESPAÑA. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to repay the joy and legacy this musical genius has given me.
