Sabemos que durante la campaña promocional del nuevo álbum de ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA «DISCOVERY» se incluyó una amplia gama de productos para promocionar y dar publicidad al mismo, además de la que se llevaría a disposición la prensa musical y prensa diaria nacional.

Fueron más de 1.000 los escaparates en tiendas especializadas los que utilizaron cartelería a todo color, banderolas especiales, móviles, además de otros artículos en esos puntos de venta para llamar la atención de posibles compradores del nuevo álbum DISCOVERY de ELO. En aquellos años no se escatimaba en esfuerzos publicitarios para conseguir ventas.

Incluso el GLOBO DE ELO, especialmente transportado desde EE.UU. viajó y visitó las principales ciudades de Reino Unido como añadido adicional a esta campaña.

Uno de esos artículos apenas conocido por los fans de ELO/JEFF fue una especie de COFRE o BAUL que hacía las veces del tesoro encontrado por el personaje árabe de donde sacaba el logo en 3D iluminado de ELO entre sus manos, tal como muestra la portada de este álbum y el vídeo «CONFUSION» promocional de este single. Y, la verdad es que éste cofre existió realmente.

En él, construido en un material de cartón resistente, suponemos que se recogía todo el material promocional para su utilización en cada establecimiento donde lo depositaban, ya que, en su interior podía albergar gran cantidad de vinilos para su venta que se podían colocar tanto a un lado como a otro del mismo cofre en los lugares destinados para ello, a modo de bolsillos laterales desmontables, además incluía posters de varios tamaños y formatos, cubos que también fueron artículos promocionales de este disco, recortables de espadas, dos figuras del personaje islámico y hasta una a tamaño real… Todo ello cubierto por una lámina ilustrada con monedas de oro y demás alhajas que hacía las veces de un GRAN TESORO y que al abrir la caja se podía hallar en su interior.

En el centro justo, el logo de ELO en 3D auguraba lo que estaba por descubrir quien lo abriese…

Tenemos que decir que hubo al menos dos versiones de este cofre. Quizá una de ellas americana y otra europea o inglesa con marcadas diferencias en cuanto al color y algún que otro detalle más en su estética exterior como los adornos frontales, así como en el interior; por ejemplo en la cantidad de álbumes que mostraba el interior de la tapa al abrirse, donde en uno se podían ver tan solo cinco de sus anteriores lanzamientos y en el otro se podían apreciar ocho, o los bolsillos laterales del cofre donde se colocaban los vinilos para su venta y que una de estas versiones los tenía y la otra versión carecía de ellos o símplemente no los incluyeron al hacer la fotografía.

Hemos hallado dos ejemplares originales de este COFRE DE DISCOVERY con dichas diferencias, aunque una de ellas a muy baja resolución que recoge su forma y todo aquello que incluía en su interior, y tanto de uno como del otro nos hemos servido para recrear, con el máximo respeto y a sabiendas de que podemos haber cometido algunos errores una réplica uniendo los dos, con el único fin de que quede constancia de su existencia, aunque fuese efímera y, lamentablemente apenas conocida por los fans de ELO/JEFF.

La versión de eBay muestra las imágenes más nítidas y claras, aunque no se complementa con los bolsillos laterales y los colores son más tenues que en la otra versión, aunque esa otra con muy baja calidad es más bonita por su parte exterior, desde nuestro punto de vista.

Nos encantaría conocer a algún fan de ELO/JEFF que pudiera aportar su ayuda para verlo tal cual fue en realidad y así subsanar nuestros posibles defectos, porque consideramos que esto es parte de la historia de ELO y por tanto, parte también de nuestra historia.

¡Ojalá con esto hayamos podido redescubrir entre aquellos fans que desconocía de la existencia de este COFRE un nuevo, y nunca mejor dicho «TESORO» que permanecía semioculto en el tiempo y pendiente de «DESCUBRIR», como el propio nombre del álbum que lo encumbra lo tenía ignorado.

Para ELO ESPAÑA ha sido todo un placer volver a darle luz y brillo para mostrarlo a los fans de ELO/JEFF lo más fielmente posible al original.

No descartamos desde ELO ESPAÑA construir la versión desmontable para que cada cual se la descargue, siempre de forma gratuita, y pueda montarse su propio COFRE DISCOVERY a tamaño reducido con materiales como una cartulina gruesa. Aunque eso dependerá de la aceptación que observemos entre los fans que lean y puedan llegar a opinar sobre este artículo.

Sin duda, desde el primer día que descubrimos la versión con menos resolución, nos pusimos manos a la obra para traerlo a ELO ESPAÑA lo más fielmente posible. Han pasado varias semanas desde entonces, pero creemos que nuestro trabajo ha valido la pena. ¡Ojalá vosotros disfrutéis de ello tanto como nosotros!

One of those items hardly known to ELO/JEFF fans was a kind of CHEST or TRUNK that served as the treasure found by the Arab character from where he took out the illuminated 3D logo of ELO between his hands, as shown on the cover. of this album and the promotional video "CONFUSION" for this single. And, the truth is that this chest really existed.
In it, built in a hard cardboard material, we suppose that all the promotional material was collected for its use in each establishment where they left it, since, in its interior it could lodge great quantity of vinyls for its sale that could be placed so much to a side as to another one of the same chest in the places destined for it, like removable lateral pockets, in addition they included posters of several sizes and formats, buckets that also were promotional articles of this disc, cutouts of swords, two figures of the Islamic character and even one to real size… All this covered by an illustrated sheet with gold coins and other jewels that served as a BIG TREASURE and that when opening the box could be found inside.
Right in the center, the ELO logo in 3D foreshadowed what was to be discovered by those who opened it…
We have to say that there were at least two versions of this chest. Perhaps one of them American and another European or English with marked differences in terms of color and some other detail in its exterior aesthetics such as the frontal decorations, as well as in the interior; For example, in the number of albums that the inside of the cover showed when opened, where in one you could see only five of their previous releases and in the other you could see eight, or the side pockets of the chest where the vinyls were placed. for sale and that one of these versions had them and the other version lacked them or they were simply not included when taking the photograph.
We have found two original copies of this DISCOVERY CHEST with these differences, although one of them at a very low resolution that shows its shape and everything that it included inside, and we have used both one and the other to recreate, with the With the utmost respect and knowing that we may have made some mistakes, a replica joining the two, with the sole purpose of recording its existence, even if it was ephemeral and, unfortunately, hardly known by ELO/JEFF fans.
The eBay version shows the sharpest and clearest images, although it is not complemented by the side pockets and the colors are more subdued than in the other version, although that other one with very low quality is prettier on the outside, from our point of view of sight.
We would love to meet any ELO/JEFF fan who could help us to see it as it really was and thus correct our possible defects, because we consider this is part of ELO's history and therefore, part of our history as well.
Hopefully with this we have been able to rediscover among those fans who were unaware of the existence of this COFRE a new, and never better said "TREASURE" that remained half-hidden in time and pending "DISCOVERY", as the very name of the album that encumbrances it was ignored.
For ELO SPAIN it has been a pleasure to give it light and shine again to show it to the fans of ELO/JEFF as faithfully as possible to the original.
We do not rule out from ELO ESPAÑA building the detachable version so that everyone can download it, always free of charge, and can assemble their own DISCOVERY CHEST at a reduced size with materials such as thick cardboard. Although that will depend on the acceptance that we observe among the fans who read and may give their opinion on this article.
Without a doubt, from the first day we discovered the version with less resolution, we got down to work to bring it to ELO ESPAÑA as faithfully as possible. Several weeks have passed since then, but we believe that our work has paid off. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
