– ¿Podemos hablar un poco sobre trabajar con JEFF LYNNE, que fue el productor de FULL MOON FEVER? Él te preguntó si tenías algo que aportar, y tú dijiste que no. Dijiste que fue un llamado de atención para ti. ¿A qué te referías con eso?
Primero que nada, fue inspirador y emocionante trabajar con JEFF. Cuando entraba en la habitación, realmente te daban ganas de esforzarte más. Pero lo que aprendí fue que tenías que presentarte con tu mejor material, o él haría algo mejor.
Siempre sentí que él me impulsaba suavemente a ser lo mejor que podía ser, y siempre parecía entusiasmarse cuando yo hacía algo bueno, lo cual me inspiraba aún más. JEFF tiene algo especial: tiene un oído súper preciso para la afinación, especialmente en el canto. Puede notar si estás un poco agudo o un poco bajo. Imagina la vibra de la canción. Es una pequeña canción pop, suave y bonita. Llega la parte del medio y de pronto entra Eric Clapton. Yo hice mi mejor intento de tocar en ese estilo, pero sabía que no era mi mejor interpretación. Me sentí realmente mal porque TOM estaba intentando incluirme en todo eso, él y JEFF. Traté de pasárselo a GEORGE. Quería quitarme la presión de encima, como diciendo: por favor no usen esa parte de guitarra. No es tan buena.
Y JEFF decía: “No, está genial.” Y GEORGE decía: “Sí, está genial.” Tenía el volumen subido en mi guitarra, así que simplemente se la pasé a GEORGE y él sacó un slide… y el resto es historia. Cuando escuchas lo que GEORGE tocó, es cien veces mejor que lo que yo hice.

Can we talk a little about working with JEFF LYNNE, who was the producer of FULL MOON FEVER? He asked you if you had anything to contribute, and you said no. You said it was a wake-up call for you. What did you mean by that?
First of all, it was inspiring and exciting to work with JEFF. When he came into the room, it really made you want to try harder. But what I learned was that you had to show up with your best material, or he’d come up with something better.
I always felt that he was gently pushing me to be the best I could be, and he always seemed to get excited when I did something good, which inspired me even more. JEFF has something special—his ear is incredibly accurate when it comes to pitch, especially vocals. He can tell if you’re a little sharp or flat. TOM and I used to laugh, because if we were a little off, he’d peer over his glasses and give us this look. In the end we told him: “Look, JEFF, whatever you do, just don’t give us that look.”
You were asked to play guitar on the TRAVELING WILBURYS’ song HANDLE WITH CARE.
JEFF told me to play something like Eric Clapton.
But after playing it, you decided GEORGE HARRISON should play it instead.
Picture the vibe of the song. It’s a sweet little pop song, gentle and pretty. Then the middle section comes in, and suddenly it’s like—Eric Clapton enters. I did my best to play in that style, but I knew it wasn’t my best work. I felt really bad because TOM was really trying to include me in the whole thing, he and JEFF. I tried to hand it off to GEORGE. I just wanted the pressure off me, like, please don’t use that guitar part. It’s not that good.
And JEFF said, “No, it’s great.” And GEORGE said, “Yeah, it’s great.” I had the volume turned up on my guitar, so I just handed it to GEORGE and he pulled out a slide… and the rest is history. When you hear what GEORGE played, it’s a hundred times better than what I did.
