BEV BEVAN habló del globo aerostático

Con motivo de la restauración del globo ELO que la banda utilizó allá por los años ’76, traemos a ELO ESPAÑA una anécdota o curiosidad referente a este globo para quienes no tuviesen conocimiento de ello, aunque la verdad es que no se difundió sólo a través de un medio…

BEV BEVAN dijo en algún momento por aquella época, que la actual formación era una de las claves del éxito continuo de la banda. «Todos nos llevamos muy bien. Nos llevó un tiempo encontrar la combinación adecuada de personas, pero ahora la armonía interna se extiende también a nuestros roadies, a nuestros técnicos de sonido e iluminación, a nuestra gestión, a la compañía discográfica; todos en nuestra organización».

También destacó que «los EFECTOS LÁSER de ELO se consideraron unos de los más impactantes en el mundo del espectáculo. Muchas de las giras contaron con efectos especiales muy elaborados. En las giras al aire libre incluyeron la «aparición» de un enorme GLOBO AEROSTÁTICO detrás del escenario durante el último número. Suspendida del globo había una bola de espejos, donde el láser rebotaba, provocando una lluvia de haces de LÁSER VERDE sobre el público. Durante un espectáculo en Los Ángeles, la policía dijo que recibieron más de 500 llamadas telefónicas de personas que decían haber visto un platillo volador verde esa noche…»

En las etapas de agosto y septiembre de 1976 de la gira por Estados Unidos, la banda utilizó un sofisticado espectáculo de luces láser, en el que los láseres rebotaban en los instrumentos de la banda para deslumbrar a la audiencia. Al final de los espectáculos, un gran globo negro con el logotipo de la nave espacial ELO estampado y que llevaba colgada una bola de discoteca con espejos, flotó detrás del escenario y se dispararon láseres. Hubo un incidente infame en un espectáculo del Anfiteatro Universal en Los Ángeles, donde el espectáculo de láser causó que muchos residentes de la ciudad entraran en pánico, haciendo más de mil llamadas telefónicas al departamento de policía para informar de un avistamiento de ovnis. Aparentemente, el globo ELO flotó lentamente a través de la ciudad y detrás del escenario mientras los láseres se reflejaban en la bola de discoteca que se podía ver desde kilómetros de distancia.

El resto del equipo es incierto, aunque probablemente Jake Commander, Brian Jones y Phil Copestake estuvieron involucrados como ingenieros o técnicos, ya que se sabía que eran buenos amigos de la banda y participaron en la mayoría de sus giras.

BEV BEVAN mentioned at some point during that time that the current lineup was one of the keys to the band's ongoing success. "We all get along very well. It took us some time to find the right combination of people, but now the internal harmony also extends to our roadies, sound and lighting technicians, management, the record company; everyone in our organization."
He also emphasized that "ELO's LASER EFFECTS were considered some of the most impactful in the entertainment world. Many tours featured highly elaborate special effects. In outdoor tours, there was the 'appearance' of a massive HOT AIR BALLOON behind the stage during the final number. Suspended from the balloon was a mirror ball, where the laser bounced, causing a rain of GREEN LASER beams over the audience. During a show in Los Angeles, the police said they received over 500 phone calls from people claiming to have seen a green flying saucer that night…"

On the fantastic Robert Porter's page, it says:
The August and September 1976 legs of the tour in the US saw the band using a sophisticated laser light show, with lasers being bounced off of the band's instruments to dazzle the audience. At the end of the shows, a large black balloon with the soon-to-be-used ELO spaceship logo emblazoned on it and carrying a mirrored disco ball was floated up behind the stage and lasers were shot off of it as well. There was an infamous incident at a Universal Amphitheater shows in Los Angeles where the laser show caused many city residents to panic, making over a thousand phone calls to the police department to report a UFO sighting. Apparently the ELO balloon was slowly floated across the city and up behind the stage while lasers reflected off the disco ball and it could be seen from miles away.
